Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced on Wednesday that Sri Lanka will tour India as a replacement for Zimbabwe, in January next year. The BCCI along with Srilankan board has come out with a schedule, which includes three T20’s in the tour to be played in 2020.
“In the wake of Zimbabwe’s suspension by ICC, the BCCI invited Sri Lanka to participate in the three-match series. Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed their participation and the itinerary is as under,” – BCCI said.
After a full council meeting in London in July this year, ICC had suspended Zimbabwe saying that the Full Member had failed to prevent government intervention in the administration of sport in the country.
“The ICC Board unanimously decided that Zimbabwe Cricket, an ICC Full Member, was in breach of Article 2.4 (c) and (d) of the ICC Constitution which imposes an obligation on Members to provide a process for free and democratic elections and to ensure that there is no government interference in its governance and/or administration for cricket respectively.” – ICC stated.
The governing body also confirmed that all ICC funding to Zimbabwe Cricket have been stopped and further the team will not be allowed to participate in any ICC events. As a part of the suspension, Zimbabwe is also out of the men’s and women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
