What went wrong for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023?

The Delhi Capitals (DC) have had a disastrous year in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) and appear bound for last place. With two games remaining in the season, the David Warner-led team has only 8 points. They have won just four games out of 12 this season.

Earlier in the season, Delhi began their season with five straight losses. It is safe to believe that in 2023, everything that could go wrong has gone for the star-studded team.

A season like this is simply not acceptable for a team with such high expectations. To get their campaign back on track, the owners, club management, and Warner will need to conduct a thorough review. Here are a few of the reasons why the Delhi team fall in 2023.

Inexperienced Batting line-up

Abishek Porel, who filled in for Rishabh Pant, struggled to make an impact with the bat in the middle order. Porel scored only 33 runs in four matches, at a poor average of 8.2 and strike rate of 106.45. The other wicketkeeper batter Sarfaraz Khan, also failed to show some magic with the bat.

The Delhi Capitals had difficulty finding a suitable wicketkeeper-batsman for their playing XI. England’s opening batsman Philip Salt was given a chance then. Salt scored five runs in his IPL debut against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He did, however, show his potential and score some key runs for his team in a few games, but a less seasoned middle order dampened his efforts.

All-rounder’s Absence

All-rounders increase a team’s chances of winning a match, and this is how international teams have won world cups and franchisees have won leagues.

This season, Delhi has three all-rounders in their squad, Mitch Marsh, Axar Patel, and Lalit Yadav. Axar Patel, however, did everything he could, but lack of support from other players cost Delhi most of the games. The capitals should begin planning for next season by providing as many opportunities for their new players to express themselves and prove their worth as possible.

Rishab Pant’s unavailability

The Delhi Capitals have been affected by Rishabh Pant’s absence due to injuries received in a car accident. As a result, the club named veteran opening batsman David Warner as interim captain, drawing on his IPL leadership experience with SRH. Unfortunately, the Delhi-based club began the campaign with five consecutive losses.

Under David Warner’s leadership, the club has made a great comeback, winning consecutive games against the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers, and another two in their next three matches. However, they lost two more games, placing the Delhi Capitals at the bottom of the 10-team points table with 8 points.
