India Senior Players Fail to Perform at IPL 2022

As this year’s IPL nears an end, talking about it has a nostalgic tone. IPL 2022 created many new records, played with new rules and sponsors, and introduced two new competent sides, and whatnot. It also showed a different side of the aged league that paved way for young players. Let’s talk about it in detail, What could be reason for the Sudden Fall of the Indian Top Players in IPL?

If we were to look at most of the franchisees keeping aside their performance and the outcome, one thing that looks common in most of them is that they were led by youngsters. Let’s take the example of RCB. The team has the biggest name on their team. Starting from the man himself, Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammad Siraj, Josh Hazelwood, etc. Apart from the good bowling performance of Josh and a few great finishers by Karthik, the team was mainly led by younger players like Rajat Patidar, Hasaranga, and Shahbaz Ahmed. The majority of experienced players took up space and barely performed. Virat Kohli who was expected to make a big impact as he left the captaincy, failed miserably some calling it ‘one of his worst IPL seasons’. Glenn Maxwell and M Siraj had a forgettable IPL and the stats are evident of that.

The same goes for Mumbai Indians who have relied on their core team year after year but this year, the bunch failed so bad that they ended up at the last spot of the points table losing 9 matches in a row which is the worst ever in IPL history. Rohit Sharma and Keiron Pollard who are MI’s biggest match-winners probably had the worst IPLs themselves. The only time they won matches, was due to younger players coming and performing from the front. Dewald Brevis, and Daniel Sams, making their debut in the IPL were great finds and must have made an impact on the management.

For those franchisees who didn’t have a line of youngsters who saved the day for them, it was their bad luck because seniors just did not perform! This IPL had many special things happening and one of them was the lack of form for most of the experienced players. We can count on our fingers the number of players who performed well. Jos Buttler, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Chahal, Rabada, for some parts Robin Uthappa, KL Rahul, de Kock, and those are the teams that made it till the end. It makes us ponder on the fact that even though this IPL is called the tournament of young guns, are their performances actually that influential in winning matches? The teams whose seniors did not perform, or lacked form could easily fall in the category of ‘inconsistent’ because it is only on some days the youngsters can save you, and the rest of the time, you lose.

What could be reason for the Sudden Fall of the Indian Top Players in IPL?

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, Mayank Agarwal, and many others who make the core India team at the current moment, are struggling with form and how. The reason could be excessive cricket, bio-bubble fatigue, lack of training with the team, redundant schedules, or simply just ‘that’ time when you don’t click.

This could be a concern for the team as they play South Africa in just 10 days where they coming up with a relatively senior team who has been training off IPL scenes. India is also chasing the world record for most consecutive T20I wins and Indian fans will be hopeful that the younger team that is selected for the tour is cohesive and plays comprehensive cricket.
