West Indies 249/3 (43.1/45 over, T:247)

West Indies won by 7 wickets (with 11 balls remaining) (D/L method)

The West Indies cricket team is touring the Netherlands currently for 3 One Day International (ODI) match series. On Tuesday, the teams played their first ODI which was interrupted by rain. On winning the toss, West Indies decided to bowl first. Let us dive into West Indies vs Netherlands Match Summary.

The hosts batting first put up a decent score of 240 but since the match was interrupted by rain, due to the D/L method, the target put up for West Indies was 247 in 45 overs. The Netherlands had a steady start as they scored 51 in the first 10 overs without losing any wicket. After losing control in the middle overs, the team lost 3 wickets in the span of 7 overs. With the match being reduced to 45 overs, the team made a sincere effort to put up a good score. The opener Vikramjit Singh scored a crucial 45 balls 47 before he fell prey to Akeal Hosein’s bowling. The middle-order couldn’t do much but Teja Nidamanuru from lower-order managed to do well and hit important quick 58 runs off 51 balls. A few 10s and 15s from other players helped the team reach a good score. Kyle Mayers and Akeal Hosein took 2-2 wickets each from WI.

The West Indies chasing a total of 247 decided by DL method played outstandingly well. They played the match as if it were T20. Shai Hope, the wicket-keeper opener played a memorable knock as he scored a convincing 119 off 130 balls. He was backed by his partner Shamarh Brooks who scored 60 odd runs. The game-changer was Brandon King after the fall of the 3rd wicket and completely changed the game for the West Indies as he scored a fiery 58 off 51 balls and closed the match with 11 balls remaining. Netherlands’ bowling looked dwarf in front of WI batting order as Logan van Beek (2) and Aryan Dutt (1) were the only players with wickets in hand.

The Player of the Match was awarded to Shai Hope who talked about his innings in post-match-presentation, as he said, “I just love batting, any chance I get I just want to try and perform. Didn’t expect to get cramps in this sort of weather, it was a bit surprising. We are enjoying our cricket at the moment, just want to continue this.”

The West Indies’ experience and skill were too much for the Netherlands, as Hope, Brooks, and King overwhelmed the hosts to secure a seven-wicket victory. Now it’s on to Thursday when these two teams meet again at the same site.
