Virat Kohli Can Surpass Ricky Ponting’s ‘This Record’ With A Century Against England

Virat Kohli will be returning to international cricket following his paternity. He left the Indian squad after the first Test against Australia in Adelaide last year as he would be raging to put his best foot forward again. Kohli has had a strange year and a fair share of which goes to the COVID-19 pandemic too. However, the first Test against England, which begins on Friday, will see Kohli returning to captaincy duties in the longest format where Ajinkya Rahane will sit back as a vice-captain.

Virat Kohli Looks To Surpass Ricky Ponting’s Tally Of Hundreds As Captain

If Kohli gets a ton in the first Test against England, he will surpass former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting in the list of captains with the most international hundreds. It would be Kohli’s 42nd international ton as captain, the highest by any player in the world. Overall, it would be Kohli’s 28th Test hundred. 32-year-old Kohli will stand alongside Australia’s Ricky Ponting at the top of most ODI centuries by a captain.

An interesting fact is to see that Kohli would be achieving the milestone in over 100 matches less than Ponting. In terms of matching Kohli’s feat in the future, Australia’s Steve Smith arguably has the strongest chance to achieve it but he’s off captaincy duty recently following the in-famous Sandpapergate incident.

India will be playing four Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is against England. The hosts will be entering the series on the back of a thrilling series win in Australia. England on the other hand will be entering the contest after a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka and will feel confident about playing in the conditions in the subcontinent after the tour.

New Zealand have assured itself of a place in the WTC finals after Australia vs South Africa is been called off. Series win between India and England will mostly choose who’ll play against New Zealand in WTC Finals. This is the first international series that is being played in India since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The successful hosting of this series will have a big impact on BCCI’s decision of whether it wants to host the upcoming season of IPL in India or the UAE.
