IPL 2023 Gujarat Titans Strength and Weakness

Gujarat Titans Strength and Weakness: The Gujarat Titans are the defending IPL champions. Only two teams in IPL history have been able to defend the title. CSK and MI defended their crown in 2010-11 and 2020-21 respectively. It is difficult to defend a championship as opposed to winning it. The stacks will be up against the Titans in IPL 2023 to repeat their heroics this time around.

We look at GT squad and analyze Gujarat Titans strengths and weaknesses:

Gujarat Titans (GT) Strengths:

#1 The winning team:

Gujarat Titans have largely retained the same squad that won the trophy last year. The side knows the art of winning a title. Post the mega auction in 2022 everyone had written off the Titans. But the side rallied brilliantly to pull off a special win in their maiden appearance. It is the confidence that the side carries which would be their biggest strength.

#2 GT Hardik Pandya – the player and GT captain:

There were many eyebrows raised when Hardik Pandya was appointed as the captain. He answered the critics in style, especially with his leadership. Pandya seemed to be in complete control as a captain. The team responded brilliantly to his captaincy calls. Pandya’s elevation as a leader in the Indian team is sure to help him even more during this season of the IPL.

#3 GT Middle order:

It was the power-packed middle order of Gujarat Titans who played a pivotal role in their success. Pandya, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan chipped in at different times to pull off many heists in IPL 2022. They will again be the backbone on whom the team will depend for performing an encore.

#4 The bowling:

Their bowling was their strongest suit last time around. Mohammad Shami, Alzaari Joseph, Rashid Khan, and Sai Kishore formed a potent combination. They not just restricted runs but also picked up crucial wickets. Their bowling with a couple of additions is bound to get stronger.

Gujarat Titans (GT) Weakness:

#1 An opener to partner Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill had a coming-of-age season with GT last season. It was only fitting that he hit the winning runs in the finals. Wriddhiman Saha made a couple of handy contributions but his best years are certainly behind him. GT doesn’t seem to have an able foil for Gill at the top of the order. Matthew Wade and Kane Williamson haven’t had the greatest of IPLs in the last few years. GT might struggle in this area.

#2 Lack of a solid number 3

Much like their opening position, GT struggle with their number 3 position too. They did try a couple of domestic players at that position but none of them delivered strong results. GT has done little to rectify that. It might come back to haunt them this season.

#3 An experienced backup seamer in GT

GT released Lockie Ferguson ahead of the auction this year. He was one of their middle-over enforcers last year. GT doesn’t have a replacement of his quality. With Shami and Joseph at the helm, GT surely lacks a backup seamer who could complement the duo.
