Shane Warne to get a tribute at Galle Test, 27 June, Colombo, Sri Lanka (ANI): When the first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia begins on June 29 at the Galle International Stadium, Sri Lankans will stand to attention in fitting respect to Australian spin magician Shane Warne, an all-time cricketing great.

The first Test will be dedicated to the memory of Warne as part of Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) admirable act. This melancholy event will evoke poignant memories of Warne, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 53 from a heart attack on March 4 while on vacation in Thailand.

“The Sri Lankan cricket establishment’s gesture is one of acknowledging Warne as a true friend of Sri Lanka who assisted the island nation following the 2004 Tsunami devastation by personally flying over and visiting affected areas and making generous donations, especially to homeless cricketers’ families.

When the author went to the Moratuwa Cricket Stadium and saw a group of young cricketers standing in a guard of honour, he had the opportunity to speak with the legend. He did express concern for the welfare of Sri Lankans impacted by the destruction of the Galle Stadium and expressed sadness over it,” according to a statement from the SLC.

Because it was at Galle that the legendary Australian bowler became the first player in test cricket history to record 500 wickets. Therein, this June 29 will undoubtedly bring back poignant memories of Shane Warne, the unyielding cricketing warrior in the middle who gave no quarter and asked for none but who showed himself to be a real friend to his opponents off the field in difficult times.

Indeed, Warne demonstrated by his selfless gesture that cricket transcends the bounds of competitiveness. It has been acknowledged by Sri Lanka Cricket, which is why it chose to dedicate the Galle Test in Warne’s honour posthumously.

On September 13, 1969, the Australian was born Shane Keith Warne, and he went on to redefine the sport of spin bowling. The arm ball that singled him out was one of his most well-known wicket-taking deliveries. In 145 Test matches, he collected a record 708 wickets, and in 194 ODI matches, 293 wickets.

Warne is recognised for his exuberant nature, amusing giggle, and a broad smile. He is also remembered as maybe the most colourful character the game has ever generated.
