Selection Panel To Discuss ODI Captaincy Role With Virat And Rohit

There have been speculations that Virat Kohli might step down from his ODI captaincy role. According to a BCCI insider, the ODI captaincy is a ‘sensitive’ subject, and there are ways to offer Rohit Sharma the responsibilities effectively for the ODI side since the ‘Hitman’ is now the full-time skipper of the Indian T20I team. Here is who will be the India ODI Captaincy Role For The South Africa Series.

The source further stated that the selectors will interact with both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to resolve the matter before making a final decision.

“The ODI captaincy is a sensitive issue. There is a school of thought that Rohit Sharma should be given charge of all white-ball cricket after being appointed the T20I captain. But for that, the selectors need to sit with Virat Kohli and know where he stands with his batting. The situation will have to be discussed with Rohit too because he is also seeking clarity on his role,” said a source.

Furthermore, the Indian selection panel will initially declare the roster for the Test series versus South Africa, with the ODI team to follow at a future date. Kohli expressed his intention to step down as skipper of the Indian T20I team prior to the 2021 T20 World Cup.

With the exception of stepping down as skipper of the Indian T20I team, Kohli has also surrendered leadership in the IPL, and will no longer head the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team beginning in IPL 2022. India’s visit to South Africa will begin on December 26th, 2021, with the much-anticipated Test match at Centurion.
