Ricky Ponting compares Suryakumar Yadav with Ab de Villiers

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting made a statement the current heartthrob of team India Suryakumar Yadav and compared him to legendary batter AB de Villiers.

Since debut, Suryakumar left no stone unturned to impress the cricket lovers all around the world. The way he started his international innings will be remembered for years for sure when he pulled England’s speedster Jofra Archer’s short ball for a six.

He quickly rose to number two in the ICC T20I Batter Rankings, just behind of Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam, and has a striking rate of 175.45.

Why Ricky Ponting compares Suryakumar with Ab de Villiers?

With ICC T20 World cup is just 2 months away, many believes he will a key player for India in the marquee event, while the legendary Australian batter also things the same, “He is a very, very exciting player and I am sure someone that’s going to find himself in their team, not just their squad. I think you would find him in their team for the T20 World Cup. And if he is in that team, then I think all the fans in Australia are going to see a very, very good player,” said Ponting in the latest episode of ICC Review.

“He is quite a confident person. He backs himself and he is never going to step down from a challenge or any situation that arises in a game. I feel he thinks he can win that situation and therefore go on and win the game for his team,” he added.

Yadav’s confidence has been a crucial and brilliant aspect of his play. He recently scored his first T20I century in Nottingham during the T20I series against England, and his performance gave Team India hope to chase down 216 runs after going to the crease when they were struggling at 31/3. Ponting thinks Suryakumar Yadav stands out from other young players in the game because of his confidence in himself and his abilities.

“Surya (Yadav) scores 360 degrees around the ground, a bit like an AB de Villiers did when he was in his actual prime. The lap shots, the late cuts, you know, the ramps over the keeper’s head. He can hit down the ground. He hits really well over the leg side, flicks to deep backward square particularly well, and he is a good player of fast bowling and is a good player of spin bowling,” he said.
