Scottish batter Richie Berrington has been named as Scotland’s new captain as Kyle Coetzer stepped down from the role earlier this month. Berrington was chosen to lead the team by the coaching staff after consultation with senior players and Cricket Scotland’s interim head of performance.
The 35-year-old Berrington is Scotland’s most capped player in T20Is and ODIs and has occasionally deputised for Coetzer.
He will be seen in action as a captain in the upcoming home tri-series. The series will against Nepal and Namibia starting on July 10. The head coach of the team Shane Burger believes that he is the right person for the role.
What Berrington says about his new role
“I feel incredibly honoured and privileged to lead this team and represent my country,” Berrington said in a press release. “Having come through the Scottish system from a young age. I’m very proud to take on the role of men’s captain.
“As a team we’re very much looking forward to what’s ahead. Three home series over the next couple of months is a great opportunity for us. To keep building on the team’s recent success. And we’ll be doing all we can to produce some good results in front of a home crowd.
“We’ve had a fantastic leader in Kyle, who has been a great ambassador for our sport and I have learnt a lot under his leadership. [In the] long term, World Cup qualification is key for us. And we are determined to keep pushing towards full member status. While continuing to develop the younger players we have coming through.”
Berrington, who has scored 4000 plus international runs while playing for the Scotland is all set for new role. While Kyle Coetzer, who had captained the Scotland side in 110 matches before leaving the leadership role earlier this month, is also a part of the squad for the triangular series.
