After the veteran batted a spectacular century in back-to-back games against New Zealand, Bairstow defeated England colleague Joe Root and New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell to win the coveted monthly honor.
Although the first match of the three-match series got off to a slow start, Bairstow scored a match-winning 136 on the final day of the second Test in Nottingham to help England win by chasing down 299 runs.
The 32-year-old batsman then contributed 162 and 71* in the series decider in Leeds to help his team earn yet another thrilling victory and a commanding series sweep. It was the second-fastest century ever scored by an English player in Test cricket.
Bairstow: We are enjoying cricket as a team
While all is going on, Bairstow hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. He helped England score additional significant World Test Championship points by making back-to-back hundreds in the rescheduled fifth and final Test against India in Birmingham earlier this month. Bairstow was ecstatic to get the award because of his recent stellar performance.
Bairstow stated, “I’d want to thank the fans for choosing me as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month.
The past five weeks in England have been wonderful. The start of our summer has been promising, with four outstanding victories over elite opposition from New Zealand and India. As a squad, we are having fun playing cricket while being confident and focused.
“Even if I have scored four centuries in this time, I would want to recognize my colleagues who have been fantastic in every department and playing with tremendous confidence.”
The next ODI series against India will include Bairstow as a player.
