In the third One-Day International against the West Indies in Barbados, Martin Guptill, Devon Conway, Tom Latham, and Daryl Mitchell all scored crucial half-centuries to propel New Zealand to a series-clinching five-wicket victory. It is the first-ever bilateral win in the Caribbean in 37 years.

In an effort to reach a challenging mark, New Zealand lost Finn Allen early as he was caught in front by Jason Holder’s full throw. With a flurry of pulls interspersed with the drive and whip at that point, Conway and Guptill re-applied pressure on the West Indies. Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Alzarri Joseph bowled on both sides of the wicket but were unable to keep up the pressure. However, it was Joseph who made the crucial discovery when he used a lifter to remove Guptill.

Conway played freely despite losing his batting partner, cutting and driving Yannic Cariah through the boundary posts. Conway was dismissed by Cariah in his very next over, giving him the victory, though. The southpaw accepted the review but was unable to change the outcome. Then, Mitchell and Lathem worked together to give New Zealand the advantage in the match. The couple, who primarily used the lofted shot, also severely injured Cariah. In reality, Mitchell hit two boundaries and a six from Cariah in the 37th over to reduce the needed run rate to just over six.

After facing Cariah, Mitchell eventually fell to a top edge, and Holder eventually took Latham’s wicket. Neesham opted to shift into high gear when the score read 259/5 by slamming a string of sixes off Cariah and Joseph. Additionally, by tonking Nicholas Pooran over deep midwicket, he scored the winning runs. Shai Hope (51 runs), Kyle Mayers (105 runs), and Pooran (91 runs) were the cornerstones of the West Indies’ batting performance earlier.

Although the former scored his runs at a strike rate of just over 50, Hope and Mayers put together a 173-run stand for the first wicket. Lockie Ferguson told Mayers to leave after they had followed Hope back to the hut. Even though wickets were falling frequently, Pooran assumed responsibility for increasing the scoring rate and eventually reached a strike rate of above 165. Pooran specifically targeted Lockie Ferguson, hitting him for three sixes in the 44th and 46th overs. Pooran also targeted the other bowlers for New Zealand.

Mitchell Santer may have made the difference in a game that saw a lot of runs, as he only conceded 38 runs in his allotted 10 overs while also taking a few wickets. Trent Boult also contributed, concluding with 3 wickets.
