NZ vs SL 3rd ODI Match Highlights – NZ WIN BY 6 WICKETS

Will Young received the player of the match award for his incredible performance which gave the New Zealand team the much-needed victory

NZ vs SL Match Highlights: The third and final ODI of the series were New Zealand beating Lankan Lions by 6 wickets. NZ eliminated the series with a 2-0 win. Within 15 overs, the hosts were 4 wickets down as the Lankans fought valiantly despite the low total they had on the board. Will Young then assumed control with an unbroken 87 and Henry Nicholls’ 44-year-old unbeaten status.

At 59-4, New Zealand was in trouble before Nicholls entered the field to help knock Sri Lanka out of the match. After giving Young vital support, Nicholls reached his winning score of 44 not out. He then clubbed a four to the boundary to secure the victory. It was yet another disappointing performance from Sri Lanka, who lost the first ODI on Saturday by a score of 198 runs after being skittled for just 76 runs, and the second match on Tuesday was called off due to rain.

NZ vs SL 3rd ODI Early On in the Innings 

After winning the toss Sri Lanka decided to bat first and in came Pathum Nissanka and Nuwanidu Fernando. Sri Lanka wanted to start in a great fashion but things did not go as planned. New Zealand was on the attack from the get-go and wickets kept falling at one end. One thing to appreciate is the batting of Pathum Nissanka who held his nerves as he scored 57 runs from 64 balls. While on the other hand, skipper Shanaka and C Karunaratne tried their best but were only to score 31 and 24 respectively. 

Even though Sri Lanka lost wickets at one end they managed to score 157 in 41.3 overs before getting rattled by the New Zealand bowlers. 

NZ vs SL 3rd ODI- Player of the Match 

Will Young received the player of the match award for his incredible performance which gave the New Zealand team the much-needed victory in order to directly qualify for the ODI World Cup in India later this year. 

Young scored 86* runs from 113 balls which included 11 brilliant fours. Along with Young Henry Nicholls also played a crucial part in the victory as he scored 44* from 52 balls to kill the game for Sri Lanka.

NZ vs SL 3rd ODI- Bowlers Standing up on the right occasion 

In this game, we saw some amazing bowling performances from both teams but New Zealand bowlers were outstanding as they took over the Sri Lankan batter in the first innings. Matt Henry, Shipley and Daryl Mitchell all three of them picked up three wickets each to restrict Sri Lanka to 157/10 in 41.3 overs.

While Sri Lankan bowlers tried very hard to defend a below-par score it was too difficult to stop New Zealand batters Yound and Nicholls took the game away from Sri Lanka. 

Lahiru Kumara from Sri Lanka picked up the highest number of wickets (2) in his 7.4 overs, and Kasun Rajitha and skipper Dasun Shanaka picked up one wicket each. 

What Happened to Sri Lanka’s Direct Qualification scenario for the ODI World Cup 2023 and What’s Next for Sri Lanka

With the series loss, the Islanders also gave up any chance of getting a direct qualification for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will be held in India later this year. They must now compete in World Cup qualifiers in June to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023.

With this victory at home, New Zealand topped the Super League standings and qualified for this year’s ODI World Cup in India. While Sri Lanka is currently ranked ninth and must compete in a qualifying round to qualify for the ODI World Cup.
