Ireland ran New Zealand close in the first two ODIs and India close in the two-match T20I series during the current home summer, but they were unable to win either of those matches. For Ireland, the luck continued and Friday turned out to be the same old scenario.

In the third ODI, New Zealand beat Ireland by one run at the Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin despite centuries from Paul Stirling and Harry Tector whitewashing the 3-match ODI series 3-0.

The pair gave New Zealand a serious fright, but the visitors managed to hold on and defend 360 in a 719-run brawl. New Zealand once again shattered the hearts of the Irish fans when Ireland needed 10 runs off the final, and Blair Tickner, their most expensive bowler on tour and least experienced seamer, sealed a one-run triumph.

Despite Stirling and Tector hitting 120 and 108 runs, respectively, Ireland were only able to reach 359 for nine in 50 overs while attempting to chase a total of 361. Earlier, New Zealand totalled 360 for six in 50 overs thanks to a stunning 115 from Martin Guptill.

The highlight of New Zealand’s innings, which also included cameos from Finn Allen (33), Tom Latham (30), Phillips (47) and Bracewell (21*), was a brisk century from Guptill and an even brisker 79 from Henry Nicholls. In the first innings, the team scored 359 runs overall in 50 overs.

Ireland was at one point on track to chase down 361 and complete the joint third-highest successful chase in men’s ODIs. Stirling and Tector put up a 179-run stand, which is the third-highest for Ireland’s third wicket and the sixth-highest overall. Stirling’s departure in the 35th over, though, almost turned the game again. When Martin Guptill, who had already boosted New Zealand’s innings with a hundred of his own, executed a sensational one-handed grab at extra cover to remove Gareth Delany for 22 off 16 balls, the situation completely collapsed. Ireland finally lost the game after starting the game 271 for 3.

Even though there were frequent wickets, Ireland was still within striking range of the target because of massive scores and seemingly little but crucial contributions from McBrine, Tucker, Dockrell, and even Hume and Young.

Unfortunately, they were only able to advance that far once again. This time, it was because of Santner’s guile, Ferguson’s speed, and wickets from Matt Henry. They certainly went for runs in a high-scoring game, but they also created opportunities that some players didn’t take. Phillips’ bomb with three drops was shocking. But New Zealand only had enough to mount an effective defense.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Martin Guptill, NZ 115 (126)

PLAYER OF THE SERIES: Michael Bracewell , NZ 190 runs • 2 wkts
