MSL 2020: Cricket South Africa Reschedule T20 Tournament To 2021

Mzansi Super League 2020 deferred to next year:

Cricket South Africa has declared that the 2020 Mzansi Super League (MSL 2020) has deferred to next year November-December.

Kugandrie Govender, acting Chief Executive Officer of CSA said that the postponement decision of the league was because of several national as well as international logistical reasons” caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the media release of Cricket South Africa (CSA), Govender said “As the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup is scheduled to be held from October to November next year in India, we comprehend the necessity of giving chance to the domestic cricketers to impress for the selection.”

“That’s why regarding MSL T20, CSA will organize a single-round domestic team T20 tournament early next year. This will provide players sufficient time to get prepared and cricket stadiums the opportunity to get better financially by welcoming the audience back to support their much-wanted domestic players.” He added.

Furthermore, the CSA cricket board said that thinking the importance of the league, it would schedule this tournament in a packed second half of the 2020/21 edition.

The acting CEO of CSA said “The 2020/21 worldwide cricket calendar will be jammed, complementing the efforts of ICC to fit as many missed international tournaments because of COVID-19. The effect of rescheduled cricket calendar for international cricket across all members of ICC and other T20 tournaments has had a knock-on impact on the cricket scheduling of South Africa.”

He added “The restrictions and uncertainty imposed due to COVID-19 at all international level, including the state of control of South African borders along with the border control at the country points of exit of international cricketers, also enforced CSA to make this decision. Also, the absence of national cricketers because of the revised and saturated edition would have weakened the quality that Cricket South Africa envisions for MSL”.
