Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins is determined to return to action in time for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) after being sidelined due to an ankle injury. Forced to miss the ICC Champions Trophy, Cummins is using this time away from the field to focus on his rehabilitation while also cherishing some quality moments with his family. The injury setback, sustained during the latter stages of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy—where Australia claimed a 3-1 series victory over India in January—meant Cummins was unable to take part in the Champions Trophy. Initially included in Australia’s preliminary squad, he was ultimately ruled out, leading to Steven Smith stepping up to lead the side. 

Australia has faced a string of injury woes, with key players like Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh also ruled out of the Champions Trophy. Despite these challenges, the team remains focused as they gear up for their opening match against England on February 22. 

For Cummins, the priority now is to ensure a smooth and full recovery. While missing out on high-profile matches is never ideal, he is taking this enforced break as an opportunity to rest, heal, and prepare for the future.  

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Cummins talked about his plans and how he is targeting IPL for return in competitive cricket, “Physically it’s quite a nice build-up for the World Test Championship final, and then the Test matches after that,” he said. That’s the aim at this stage -– start bowling over the next week or so, building up, and should be right for IPL.” 

His return will be crucial for both his IPL franchise and Australia’s long-term plans, especially with major assignments like the World Test Championship on the horizon. 

Cummins enjoyed a successful season with IPL club Sunrisers Hyderabad last year, as he guided the team to the finals. There is still a month till the IPL 2025, and as he works his way back to fitness, Cummins remains optimistic and committed to making a strong comeback when the time is right.
