Tim Seifert Ruled Out of West Indies T20I Series with Broken Finger
Seifert Suffers Finger Injury During Ford Trophy Game
New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies after suffering a broken finger. The injury occurred during a Ford Trophy match for Northern Districts against Wellington Firebirds, where Seifert retired hurt after being struck on the right index finger.
Subsequent scans confirmed the fracture, ruling him out of the crucial home series.
Mitch Hay Named as Replacement
In Seifert’s absence, Mitch Hay has been called up as his replacement for the series, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on Monday.
Hay, who made his T20I debut in November 2024, has already featured in 11 T20 internationals and even holds the world record for most dismissals (6) in a T20I innings.
Coach Rob Walter Expresses Disappointment
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his disappointment over losing one of his key players ahead of the series.
“We’re all feeling for Tim,” Walter said. “He’s a key member of this T20 unit given his power at the top of the order and his role as keeper, so he’ll be missed over the next five matches.”
Walter added that the team hopes for a quick recovery so Seifert can return to action soon.
Mitch Hay’s Opportunity to Shine
Coach Walter praised Hay’s inclusion, highlighting his wicketkeeping skills and batting potential.
“Mitch has shown in his international opportunities so far that he’s a top-quality wicketkeeper-batter and is more than capable of contributing at this level,” Walter said.
He further noted that Hay’s selection reflects New Zealand’s growing depth in the T20 format.
Impact on New Zealand’s Plans
Seifert’s injury comes at a crucial time as New Zealand prepares for the T20 World Cup 2026. His absence affects both the top order and keeping role, forcing the Kiwis to adjust their playing XI and strategies for the West Indies series.
Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic, relying on its bench strength to step up during the series.
