Why Najmul Shanto resigns as Bangladesh Test Captain?
After Bangladesh’s recent loss in the second test of the Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka 2025, their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto gave up his role as the skipper. What exactly prompted him to do so? Let’s have a look at why Najmul Hossain Shanto resigns as Bangladesh Test Captain.
What exactly happened in the test?
Bangladesh chose to bat after winning the toss in the second Test, putting up 247 runs in their first innings. Opener Shadman Islam was the top scorer with 46. Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando and Sonal Dinusha took three wickets each. In reply, Sri Lanka dominated with the bat, scoring 458 runs. Pathum Nissanka led the way with a brilliant 158, while Dinesh Chandimal added 93 and Kusal Mendis remained unbeaten on 84. Bangladesh, trailing by 211 runs, struggled in their second innings and were bowled out for just 133 on Day 4.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the only notable contributor. Prabath Jayasuriya starred with the ball, taking five wickets for 56 runs, as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 78 runs. Bangladesh who although drew the first test against the hosts, were unable to even get near to them in the second tests.
Cause for his Resignation
Shanto had led his nation in 17 tests, however, he was only able to win just 3 tests, and 12 losses in his red-ball captaincy. He also mentioned that he leaves the role for the betterment of Bangladesh in the test format, as they aim to cement themselves as a top-class team in the future.
With the test captaincy role open, players like Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Litton Das, and Mominul Haque might be into consideration for the role. With no official confirmation who is set to take the role Bangladesh now concentrate on the ODI and T20I series in the Sri Lanka Tour to be completed with a great record.
