Virat Kohli rejects BCCI domestic cricket demand

Former India captain Virat Kohli has subtly pushed back against the growing sentiment within the BCCI that senior players should participate in domestic cricket to remain in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup. His recent comments suggest he does not entirely agree with the notion that domestic cricket is essential for maintaining form or fitness. So let’s have a look about Why did Virat Kohli rejects BCCI domestic cricket demand.

Kohli’s remarks came after his match-winning display in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, where he scored a magnificent 135 off 120 balls—his 52nd ODI century and a new record for most international hundreds in a single format.

Kohli’s Take: Preparation Is More Mental Than Physical

During the post-match presentation, Kohli addressed the debate around domestic cricket, revealing that he does not rely heavily on extensive preparation to stay in form.

“I’ve never been a big believer in a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel good mentally, I can play the game,” Kohli said.

With both Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Tests and T20Is, their game time will largely depend on ODI schedules. With fewer ODIs lined up, selectors fear a lack of match practice could impact the form of the veteran batters.

BCCI Wants Kohli, Rohit in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Reports indicate that the BCCI wants both players to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy to ensure they stay match-ready. Although Kohli has reportedly agreed, his recent statements reflect that he doesn’t see domestic cricket as a necessity for maintaining his standards.

Fitness Is a Lifestyle: Kohli Explains His Routine

Kohli added that his fitness is never compromised because it is an integral part of his daily life—whether he is in India or abroad.

“I work physically very hard every day. It’s got nothing to do with cricket anymore. It’s the way I live.”

He stressed that as long as he feels mentally sharp and physically ready—able to react quickly and run hard—he knows he is fully prepared to compete.

“Only Players Out of Form Need More Games” – Kohli

Kohli highlighted that, after playing over 300 ODIs and 15+ years of international cricket, he understands the needs of his body better than anyone.

“If you can bat two hours in the nets without a break, you’re meeting all the markers. If there’s a dip in form, then you look for games.”

Kohli Likely to Play Vijay Hazare Before New Zealand Series

According to the Times of India, Kohli will participate in a few Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Delhi. After the ongoing SA tour, he will briefly return to London before joining the team in Bengaluru and then reuniting with the Indian squad for the New Zealand home series in January.
