Shaheen Afridi named new Pakistan ODI captain

Pakistan cricket has witnessed yet another captaincy shuffle as wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has been removed from his role as the ODI captain. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new skipper for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 4 in Faisalabad. So let’s look at Shaheen Afridi named new Pakistan ODI captain.

Another Leadership Change for Pakistan

This marks the third captaincy change in Pakistan’s ODI setup in just 12 months. Rizwan, who took over the reins last October after Babar Azam’s resignation, could not deliver consistent results, particularly in major tournaments.

Under his leadership, Pakistan endured a poor Champions Trophy campaign, finishing at the bottom of Group A, behind India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.

PCB Confirms Appointment of Shaheen Afridi

According to a PCB statement, Shaheen Afridi’s appointment was confirmed following a meeting of the selection committee in Islamabad, which was also attended by Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson.

“A meeting of the selection committee, also attended by head coach Mike Hesson, decided that Shaheen will lead Pakistan’s ODI side against South Africa,”

The upcoming ODI series against South Africa will be played on November 4, 6, and 8, with all matches scheduled at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad.

Rizwan’s Mixed Record as ODI Captain

Rizwan’s tenure began with promise, guiding Pakistan to a historic 2-1 series win in Australia, their first in 22 years. The team followed it up with a 3-0 whitewash of South Africa and a 2-1 victory in Zimbabwe, signaling a positive direction.

However, the momentum faded in 2025. Pakistan lost the home tri-series final to New Zealand and endured a disappointing Champions Trophy exit. The final blow came during the West Indies tour, where Pakistan suffered a 2-1 defeat — their first ODI series loss in the Caribbean in 34 years.

Shaheen Afridi’s Return to Leadership

Shaheen Afridi, 25, has previous leadership experience, having captained Pakistan in five T20 internationals in New Zealand in early 2024. However, after a 4-1 series loss, he was relieved of his duties.

Now, the left-arm pacer has another chance to prove himself in the 50-over format. Known for his aggression and ability to inspire young players, Shaheen’s appointment signals a renewed focus on building Pakistan’s white-ball future.

Looking Ahead

With Pakistan looking to rebuild ahead of the next ICC event, Shaheen Afridi’s leadership will be under close watch. Fans hope the fiery fast bowler can bring the same intensity to captaincy that he brings to his bowling spells.
