Why Bronco Test Postponement for Indian Cricket Team?
The Bronco Test, a new fitness drill proposed for the Indian cricket team, has been postponed and was not conducted before the Asia Cup 2025. So Let’s take a look at Why Bronco Test Postponement for Indian Cricket Team.
Background of the Bronco Test and Its Proposed Adoption
The Bronco Test is a rigorous shuttle running drill primarily used in rugby to assess cardiovascular endurance, requiring participants to run continuous shuttles of 20, 40, and 60 meters within a set time. Recently, the Indian team’s new Strength & Conditioning coach, Adrian Le Roux, recommended its adoption to modernize and intensify the fitness criteria for cricketers. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) had planned to introduce the Bronco Test during the mandatory fitness camp at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. However, despite speculation and anticipation, only routine health check-ups, agility drills, and the existing Yo-Yo test were included. The Bronco Test was notably left out of the regimen, raising questions about the reasons for its postponement.
Reasons and Implications Behind the Postponement
According to multiple reports, the postponement was primarily a logistical and strategic decision. A source quoted in the Times of India clarified that the Bronco Test might still be implemented after the squad assembles in Dubai for the Asia Cup 2025. The players began leaving for Dubai on the night of September 3, with the first scheduled training at the ICC Academy on September 5. The management and coaching staff are considering conducting the Bronco Test once the team is settled in Dubai, focusing first on the traditional health and agility checks to avoid overloading the squad immediately after a long break. There is also speculation that the new intensity demanded by the Bronco Test could require further acclimatization and preparatory work, especially since Indian players are more accustomed to the Yo-Yo test, which is currently not a selection criterion but only serves as a fitness snapshot. Additionally, some reports hint at hesitancy or reservations among players and team members about the test’s rigor and relevance, contributing to the decision to postpone its immediate adoption.
The Bronco Test for the Indian cricket team has not been scrapped but postponed, mainly to ensure players’ readiness and potentially to introduce it in a more controlled environment during the Asia Cup in Dubai. Whether it becomes a regular part of the Indian fitness setup remains to be seen.
