New Zealand’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan have taken a hit, with Tom Latham ruled out after suffering a fractured hand during training. In his absence, Michael Bracewell will take over the captaincy, while Henry Nicholls has been called up to reinforce the squad.  Let us look at details on Who will lead New Zealand in ODI series vs Pakistan?

Latham, who was set to lead the team before heading to the IPL with Mitchell Santner, sustained the injury while batting in the nets. Subsequent X-rays confirmed a fracture in his right hand, which will require him to wear a cast and undergo a minimum of four weeks of rest and rehabilitation. 

Michael Bracewell, fresh off captaining New Zealand to a T20I series victory over Pakistan, will now assume leadership in the ODI series as well. Meanwhile, Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties. 

Former skipper Kane Williamson was not in consideration for selection, having made himself unavailable for the series. 

The team’s opening combination will likely feature Nick Kelly alongside Will Young, stepping in for Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, both of whom are engaged with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The middle order, featuring key players like Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, and Bracewell himself, looks well-balanced. 

In the bowling department, Will O’Rourke, who rejoined the squad for the final two T20Is, will continue leading the seam attack. Supporting him will be Ben Sears, Jacob Duffy, and Nathan Smith, as New Zealand looks to maintain its winning momentum. 

After securing a dominant 4-1 victory in the T20I series, the Black Caps will aim for a similar performance in the 50-over format. The three-match ODI series kicks off on Saturday, March 29, in Napier, followed by matches on April 2 in Hamilton and final ODI on April 5 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
