Shamar Joseph was born on August 31, 1999 in Baracara, a small village in East Berbice-Corentyne. Joseph was reared in a family of five brothers and three sisters.
As a child, Joseph studied footage of West Indies cricket team opening bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh and attempted to replicate them in his tape ball games around the hamlet. Baracara had only one black-and-white television and no other means of contact aside from landlines, so he grew up with little to no access to the internet or phone service. The village got introduced with the internet on 2018.

Shamar Joseph, together with his father and siblings, began his career in the forestry industry, felling and chopping logs in the Bacara and transporting them to New Amsterdam via the Canje River. After almost being struck by a falling tree, Joseph decided to leave Bacara and relocate to New Amsterdam to support his family.
Shamar Joseph started as a worker in the construction sector in New Amsterdam before becoming a security guard. His job as a security guard required long 12-hour shifts, both during the day and at night, which limited his time for cricket activities.
Joseph eventually decided to abandon his job and devote himself full-time to his cricketing dreams, with the aid of his fiancée. He made an immediate impression in Division 1 cricket, with debut numbers of 6 off 13. He also attended Curtly Ambrose’s fast bowling clinic in Berbice.
In a trial match, he took eight wickets, cementing his domination and earning a call-up to the first-class cricket squad.
Following a successful List-A career, Shamar Joseph joined the Guyana Amazon Warriors as an injury replacement for Keemo Paul in the 2023 Caribbean Premier League, where he was first assigned as a net bowler. Joseph was inspired to pursue a cricket career by Prasanna Agoram, a Warriors talent scout he met during his first CPL season.
On September 17, 2023, Joseph made his Twenty20 debut against the Barbados Royals in a league stage match. Despite appearing in only two games during his original 2023 Warriors assignment, Joseph impressed with his ability to consistently reach speeds exceeding 140 kmph.
Shamar made his international debut in December 2023, when he was included to the West Indies Test team as one of seven uncapped players for the visit to Australia, where they played two test series as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025.
On January 17, 2024, he played the first test of a two-match series against Australia at Adelaide Oval.
The first two periods he bowled at the Karen Rolton Oval against the Cricket Australia XI team earned him a spot in the first test match of the series against Australia, as his bowling performances in the lone tour match delighted the West Indies selectors. The bowler made his debut in international cricket unforgettable by taking the wicket of modern-day legend Steve Smith.
