Mohammed Shami’s Fitness and Return: Key Updates Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Mohammed Shami and his injury condition, When will he Return?

The Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been given a tight deadline to ensure his place in India’s squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following a long injury layoff, Shami recently made a successful return to competitive cricket with Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, his spot in the team for the prestigious BGT test series against Australia depends on his fitness levels. Let’s look at When will Mohammed Shami Return.

The BCCI medical team is monitoring closely Shami’s progress, with a key requirement being his weight loss and improved fitness. How will Shami get into the national team?

Shami’s Absence Over a Year

India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah had been recently talking about the possibility of Mohammed Shami’s inclusion in the ongoing Test series against Australia. Shami, who hasn’t played for India since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, missed the action due to an ankle injury and subsequent surgery. Despite not being fully fit, Shami was the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup, claiming 24 wickets in seven matches.

The pacer’s recent outings sparked optimism about his return to international cricket. Since his comeback, Shami has been in mixed form, taking four wickets in his first four Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games, with a best of 3/21 in a match-winning effort against Hyderabad.

What BCCI Has To Say About This

BCCI has been closely monitoring Mohammed Shami’s fitness, according to some reports Nitin Patel and NCA trainer Nishant Bordoloi have been overseeing his recovery. Although Shami’s SMAT matches started on November 23, he has 10 days to prove his readiness.

Although, his return to international cricket might be cautious, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy starting.

His performance in the T20s may not fully reflect his readiness for Tests, but he could be sent to train with Team India if he passes the SMAT fitness challenge. If everything goes well, Shami may return for the third Test, which starts on December 14.
