Why India Lost ODI Series against Sri Lanka?

Why India failed in Sri Lanka despite playing with a full-strength side?

Why India Lost ODI Series against Sri Lanka: After a disappointing performance in all three ODIs, the Indian team faced a heavy series defeat against the Lankan Lions. This win marked a historic achievement for the Sri Lankan team as they won a bilateral series against India after 27 long years. Even though Sri Lankan performed well it was the Indian batter who spoiled the series for the national side.

In this Sri Lanka tour the Indian team first won the T20I series 3-0 and now the home team returned strongly to win the ODI series 2-0 and complete the revenge. The Indian team was on a downfall in this series where multiple mistakes costed the games, affecting the series’ outcome.

Even though the Indian team had their key players missing, they were at least expected to show some fighting spirit, which we could see only in a few players. Even skipper Rohit Sharma stated the lack of intent from the boys, especially with the middle-order batters against the Lankan spin attack was missing.

#4 Bowlers Failed to Contain Sri Lankan Batters

Given that the Colombo pitch is spin-friendly the Indian bowlers failed to contain the home side for fewer runs. Where the Lankan Lions scored 230+ runs in all three ODI matches, moreover all three matches they batted first and won by restricting the Indian team. Here the Indian bowlers did not have the same impact as the Lankan spinners, where Sri Lanka used the pitch conditions to their advantage.

Indian spinner even though picked up wickets occasionally they failed to give a major contribution compared to the Lankan team. If you look at the stats the Indian spinner in all three ODIs picked up 17 wickets, when compared to 27 wickets taken by the Lankan spinners.

#3 Middle Order Failure

In this series, we saw complete failure from the middle-order batter of the Indian team as they failed to score runs against the Lankan bowling attack. Even though the Indians tried to pull through the Sri Lanka bowlers they never really held the rope as they failed in all three matches. Players like KL Rahul, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer, and even Riyan Parag in the final ODI failed to make an impact as a middle-order batsman.

#2 Over-Reliance on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Over the years both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have played some matching winning knocks, which has carried the Indian team over the line. However, in this series, we saw Rohit performing in his style, while Kohli failed to shine with the bat. So due to the over-reliance on these key players, the rest of the Indian batting lineup failed to take up the responsibility.

#1 Unable to Handle the Lankan Spin Attack

The Indian batters were completely outsmarted by the Lankan spinners, and the Indian batters failed to adapt to the conditions. Even skipper Rohit stated that India lacked in playing certain shorts against Sri Lankan spinners. In the three ODI, the Sri Lankan spinners picked up 27 wickets, which was pretty much the key factor in the series win of the Sri Lanka team in this ODI series.
