What went wrong for LSG in IPL 2024?

The Lucknow Super Giants had a roller-coaster season in the 2024 Indian Premier League, ending with 14 points from their 14 matches. Despite high hopes, given their previous playoff qualifications, the team couldn’t make it past the league stage this year. Several factors contributed to their performance issues.

KL Rahul’s Strike-Rate Issues

KL Rahul’s batting strike-rate was a significant talking point throughout the season. Although he scored 520 runs in 14 matches, his strike-rate of 134.61 was considered low for the T20 format. Two particular innings highlighted his struggles:

A 37-ball half-century against Mumbai Indians and a 33-ball 29 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His inconsistent strike-rate seems to be coupled with missing out on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad that added pressure on him.

Inexperienced Pace Attack

LSG’s pace attack lacked the necessary experience in the side. Where Mohsin Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq were the standout bowlers, taking 11 and 14 wickets respectively, but even Naveen was expensive at times. Yash Thakur, despite a notable 5/30 against Gujarat Titans, also struggled with consistency against teams like SRH, KKR, and RR.

Inconsistent Indian Batters

The performance of LSG’s Indian batters was another weak point. Devdutt Padikkal, who joined from Rajasthan Royals, managed only 38 runs from seven matches. Ayush Badoni had a couple of half-centuries but lacked consistency. Deepak Hooda, Arshin Kulkarni, and Krunal Pandya also failed to deliver reliable performances.

Injuries to Key Players

Injuries played a significant role in LSG’s struggles. Pacer Mayank Yadav was in excellent form, taking three wickets each against PBKS and RCB, but a muscle tear against Mumbai Indians sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Mohsin Khan also suffered a head injury against Kolkata Knight Riders, returning for the last two games but failing to make an impact.
