What Does an Uncapped Player Mean in IPL?

The term uncapped player in the Indian Premier League(IPL) refers to a player who has not yet played in any International matches for the nation or who has retired for five years from International Cricket is considered an uncapped player at the Indian Premier League auction, this rule was Introduced in 2008 but this rule has never been used in the IPL, and later discontinued in 2021

This rule in the Indian Premier League provides a platform for young and uncapped players to showcase their talent. It offers them a chance to gain experience and attracts selectors from their respective cricket boards.

As per the reports, The Board members of the Indian Premier League recently conducted a meeting with ten franchise owners to discuss retention rules for the upcoming IPL auction. During the meeting, the owner of Chennai Super Kings proposed reinstating the rule of retaining uncapped players, in order to keep MS Dhoni for the next season. Another franchise owner also supported this proposal.

One franchise owner has stated that uncapped players who have not played international cricket for five years may struggle to be bought into the IPL if they are considered at the regular base price. Multiple Indian Premier League franchises have agreed that Indian uncapped players who have not participated in international cricket for five years should be eligible for sale at a lower price in the IPL auction. This decision to lower the price could provide retired players with an opportunity to be purchased in the IPL auction.
