Ashwin doubted as red ball player in 2011

Ravichandran Ashwin has once again grabbed the limelight after his historic all-round performance in the first test match against Bangladesh in Chennai.

The bowling all-rounder shared his cricket journey while speaking to broadcasters JioCinema after the match, and named Harbhajan Singh as his inspiration. Ashwin said that he joined the Indian team as a replacement of Harbhajan Singh.

He added that people also doubted his ability to perform as a red-ball player, mainly because he got most appreciation for his IPL performance.

However, Ashwin proved them wrong with his exceptional all-round performance in red-ball cricket. He not only surpassed Harbhajan Singh’s tally, but also became only the second Indian to claim 500 or more wickets in test cricket.

“I can’t really comment on what sort of impact I have had on this Test match. I had huge shoes to fill, I came in to replace Harbhajan, I used to replicate his action in junior cricket, he was an inspiration to me. Constantly people have doubted if I could deliver in red-ball as I came from IPL, lots of people have come and helped me,” Ashwin said after the first test.

Ashwin not only emerged as one of the best-off spin bowlers in the world, but he is a sound batter also. His century knock in the test versus Bangladesh was the highlight of batting prowess.

With India set to play nine more test matches in the next four months, with 4 being at home. Ashwin will likely play a key role in all these games before the big WTC 2025 finals.

Team India presently leads the WTC standings, and their massive 280-run victory over Bangladesh only enhanced their position. Team India has qualified for both the WTC finals but has yet to win the prestigious ICC event.
