SL vs NZ 2nd Test Day 2

The duo of Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis shocked New Zealand with their century knock on the SL vs NZ 2nd Test Day 2 match to provide Sri Lanka a solid momentum. 

Kamindu Mendis, who scored a ton in the first match, continued his good touch, smashed yet another century and remained unbeaten at 182. While Kusal Mendis provided full support to Kamindu and completed his tenth test century, as Sri Lanka declared their first innings at 602 for 5. 

Sri Lanka’s move to ask New Zealand to bat for the last 14 overs of the day worked well for the hosts, and they got the wicket of Tom Latham for two and Devon Conway for nine, as New Zealand ended day 2 at 22 for 2.  

SL vs NZ 2nd Test Summary

Earlier, Sri Lanka faced a shaky start after losing their first wicket in the first over itself. They, however, bounced back thanks to a 122-run second wicket partnership between Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal before Karunaratne walked back to pavilion.  

The wicketkeeper batter Chandimal played a knock of 116, while Angelo Mathews missed his century by 88 runs.

Kusal Mendis joined Kamindu Mendis when Team Sri Lanka was at 402 for 5, both added 200 runs for the sixth wicket and completed their tons in process, with the hosts declared their innings at 602.  

After losing the wickets of Tom Latham and Devon Conway early, Ajaz Patel joined the experienced Kane Williamson (6*) at the middle as night watchman and both remained unbeaten at stumps on day 2. They will start the proceedings for the tourists on day 3.  

Kamindu Mendis continues his dream run in Test cricket

Kamindu Mendis has been on a roll in 2024 as he has scored a whopping 943 runs and is the second highest run-getter in test this year. Interestingly, he has played eight innings less than the top-scorer Joe Root (986).

The left-arm batter after completing a ton in the first innings of the second test now leads the list of batters with most centuries in 2024 and he also became the fastest Asian to record 1000 runs and five centuries. Kamindu accomplished these feats in only 13 innings, surpassing Pakistan’s Fawad Alam’s five centuries Asia record in 22 innings. While Mendis also equaled Don Bradman’s 1 1000-run mark record in 13 innings.

Sri Lanka leads the test series 1-0 after beating New Zealand by 63 runs in the two-match test series. Their start in the second test also bodes well for the home team’s future success.
