Shubman Gill Vice-Captain for England Test Series 2025

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to announce the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, which marks the beginning of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle. While Rohit Sharma has yet to officially confirm his long-term future as Test captain, he has clarified that he is not retiring and remains in charge for now. So let’s have a look Shubman Gill Vice-Captain for England Test Series 2025.

However, the bigger development surrounds the vice-captaincy. With Jasprit Bumrah unlikely to feature in all five Tests due to workload management, the selectors are considering a change in leadership support. According to media reports, the BCCI is keen to appoint Shubman Gill as the new Test vice-captain ahead of the crucial tour.

Bumrah has served as Test vice-captain for the past three years and has led the team in three matches, including a memorable win in Australia. But concerns over his fitness, availability and workload for a long series like the one in England have prompted the BCCI to look for a more consistent presence in the squad’s leadership group.

As reported by The Indian Express, selectors want a deputy who is expected to play the full series. Among the current core players, only Shubman Gill (25) and Rishabh Pant (27) fit that bill. Senior players such as Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul are in their 30s, while Yashasvi Jaiswal, though promising, is considered too young at 23 for a leadership role just yet.

Gill, who has already been handed leadership duties in Zimbabwe and served as T20I vice-captain on the Sri Lanka tour, is part of BCCI’s future leadership roadmap. His elevation in Test cricket would be a natural progression in that direction.

The high-stakes series in England begins on June 20 in Leeds. The five-match battle continues with Tests at Birmingham (July 2–6), Lord’s (July 10–14), Manchester (July 23–27), and the final Test in London starting July 31.
