The Proteas are yet to play two homes test matches against Pakistan, and only one win is enough for them to reach the WTC finals next June.
Australia, currently in second spot, will be needing to win at least three games in their remaining five tests – 3 against India and two versus Sri Lanka.
For India, a 4-1 BGT result will provide them a direct qualification, while two wins and a draw in BGT will also keep them above Australia in final WTC standings.
South Africa vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Highlights
The Proteas posted 358 runs in their first innings while opting to bat, thanks to century knocks from Ryan Rickelton (101) and Kyle Verreynne (105).
Sri Lanka played decently in their first innings to post 328, just 30 runs short of Proteas total. The hosts, in reply, scored 317 and invited the Island team to chase 348 runs.
Players Angelo Mathews (32), Kamindu Mendis (35), Dhananjaya de Silva (50), and Kusal Mendis (46), all got good starts, but they failed to convert it into big knocks that harmed tourists’ chances to draw the series.
Earlier in the series, the Proteas bowled out Sri Lanka for 42 in the first innings of the opening test match at Durban and declared their second innings at 365 for 5 to set a whopping target of 516, which Sri Lanka failed to chase and lost the game by 233 runs.
