The day one of the ICC World Test Championship 2025 Final between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s was a befitting one, with a gripping day of Test cricket dominated by bowlers. Under cloudy skies above and a responsive pitch below, both the pace attacks had their word in a closely fought contest, but come Day 1 stumps, it was Australia who had the better of it. South Africa vs Australia Final Updates

Rabada Leads the Charge with 5-Wicket Haul Against Australia

Winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, South Africa’s plan appeared to be perfect in the early stages as Kagiso Rabada dismantled the Australian top and tail with a spell of brilliance. He ended the day at 5 for 51 runs as he sent packing players like Khawaja, Green, Cummins, Starc, and Webster.

Aussies were in early woes at 67 for 4, but a gritty 66 by Steve Smith and a counter-attacking 72 by Beau Webster saw them recover to a decent total of 212 all out. Assisted by Rabada, Marco Jansen added 3 wickets, and Maharaj and part-timer Markram claimed one each.

Aussies Strike Back to Dominate Day 2

But the South African batsmen could not escape their bowlers’ hard work. During the conditions of testing, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc unleashed a scorching spell of fast bowling to leave the Proteas at 43 for 4 at the end of play.

Starc was especially deadly, having dismissed both openers Aiden Markram for a duck and Ryan Rickelton for 16. Pat Cummins and Hazlewood took up the cause with the dismissals of Mulder and Stubbs, placing South Africa in a hole deep enough. Captain Temba Bavuma fought with 36 but was dismissed by Cummins.

By the Day 2 lunch break, David Bedingham was batting at 39 not out, while Kyle Verreynne was on 11 not out. South Africa trails by 91 runs with five wickets remaining as they approach the lunch break on Day 2. The game has shifted in Australia’s favor, but with two strong bowling attacks and potentially unpredictable English conditions, it remains finely poised.
