Rohit Sharma or Jasprit Bumrah: Who is better Test captain?

Everything was going right for both India and Rohit Sharma until the home series against New Zealand, which altered the winning momentum and after losing four in last five games, question arose on Rohit Sharma’s role as Test captain. Let’s see Rohit or Bumrah Who is better Test captain.

The team was way ahead in WTC standings and was required to win 5 out of eight games to qualify for the WTC 2025 finals without depending on others before the New Zealand series.  

The scenario then changed, with India dropping to second after facing a 3-0 defeat against the Kiwis under Rohit Sharma.  

India’s regular ODI and Test captain then missed the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy game in Perth, which India won. While a loss in the BGT Test marked as four consecutive defeats under Rohit Sharma in Test.  

These losses once again open the debate of Rohit Sharma’s role as Test captain.  

India’s Test captain debate: Rohit or Jasprit?

Rohit Sharma, the T20 World Cup winning captain, has led India in as many as 22 test matches, in which India won 12 and lost eight, while two ended in a draw. Rohit’s win percentage as India’s Test captain is 57.14 percent. 

However, India faced defeats in the last four games captained by Rohit Sharma.  

Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, has led India in two red-ball games so far both during Rohit’s unavailability, winning one in Australia and losing one in England.  

That one win came against the mighty Australian team in Perth when Bumrah-led Indian side won BGT 2024-25 opener by 295 runs.  

The one quality that gives Bumrah an edge at the moment is his ability to dictate the game with the ball in his hand and the entire team revolves around him, exactly what we saw in the Perth Test.  

Rohit Sharma struggled with the bat in the longest format of the game, especially in 2024, scoring just 597 runs in 23 innings.  

There is no doubt that the team needed a captain with experience like Rohit Sharma. But Jasprit Bumrah’s ability as captain and his caliber to lead the team from the front cannot be neglected.
