Master of spin R Ashwin receives one of India’s highest civilian awards

In a proud moment for Indian cricket, former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was honoured with the Padma Shri award, one of the nation’s highest civilian distinctions. The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28, saw President Droupadi Murmu bestowing the award on Ashwin in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries. Recognised as one of India’s greatest spin bowlers, Ashwin called time on his illustrious international career after the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne in 2024. Despite stepping away from the international arena, Ashwin remains active in the domestic scene, currently representing Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. 

R Ashwin’s journey in international cricket 

Ashwin’s international career boasts remarkable numbers. In Test cricket between 2011 and 2024, he played 106 matches, taking a stunning 537 wickets at an average of 24.00, with best figures of 7/59. His ability to dominate in long spells is reflected in his 37 five-wicket hauls and eight ten-wicket match hauls. 

In the ODI format, from 2010 to 2023, Ashwin featured in 116 matches, scalping 156 wickets at an economy of 4.93. His best bowling figures of 4/25 highlight his control and guile even in limited-overs cricket. 

In T20 Internationals, he played 65 games, capturing 72 wickets at an average of 23.22 and an economy of 6.90, showcasing his adaptability across formats. 

Ashwin’s performance in IPL 

Ashwin’s IPL journey has been equally noteworthy. Over 219 matches, he has picked up 185 wickets at an economy rate of 7.19 with a best bowling performance of 4/34. His consistent performances underline his longevity and value in the league. 

Beyond individual brilliance, Ashwin’s career is adorned with team triumphs. He was part of India’s victorious squads in the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. At the franchise level, he helped CSK clinch IPL titles in 2010 and 2011 and also lifted the Champions League T20 trophy in 2014. 

The Padma Awards, comprising Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, honour individuals excelling in diverse fields. Ashwin’s recognition with the Padma Shri reflects his outstanding contribution to Indian cricket and his enduring legacy.
