Pat Cummins Ashes Return: Fitness Update Ahead of Second Test

Australia captain Pat Cummins has delivered a positive update on his fitness, suggesting he could make a return for the second Ashes Test at The Gabba starting December 4. Cummins, who is recovering from a lower back injury, missed the opening Test in Perth but has shown encouraging progress during recovery sessions. So let’s have a look at Pat Cummins Ashes return.

Cummins Steps Up Recovery Work

The star fast bowler revealed that he has been undergoing strong bowling sessions in Perth over the past week, gradually loading up to assess his readiness.

“It’s feeling good. I had a couple of good sessions in Perth this week… It’s on track and pulling up pretty well. (I’m) half a chance for the next game,” Cummins told Kayo Sports.

Cummins added that he would continue training over the next few days before a final decision is made regarding his participation.

Decision Likely Closer to Match Day

While optimistic, Cummins confirmed that his availability would be determined after discussions with the medical team, selectors and support staff.

“There’s a few things at play… you want to get a bit of a feel, have a look at the wicket and make a decision. If I don’t want to play, no one is going to put me in that position.”

He is confident that with another couple of sessions and a two-week gap before the fixture, he should be in strong contention to take the field at The Gabba.

Australia Missing Key Firepower

Cummins’ potential return would be a major boost for Australia, who are already without pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood. Hazlewood has been ruled out of the first two Tests due to a hamstring injury, raising doubts over his presence for the remainder of the five-match series.

In Cummins’ absence, debutant Brendan Doggett has featured in the Perth Test and impressed with a five-wicket haul. However, if Cummins is declared fit, Doggett may make way for the returning captain.

Australia Eye Strong Response

With England pushing for early momentum in the Ashes, the return of one of the world’s best fast bowlers could play a crucial role in Australia’s campaign as the series shifts to Brisbane — one of their most dominant Test venues.
