Papua New Guinea Cricketer Jailed for Robbery Incident

Papua New Guinea wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery during his team’s stay in Jersey earlier this year. The incident, which involved the assault of a woman and theft of her mobile phone, has raised serious concerns about athlete behaviour during international tours. So let’s have a look at Papua New Guinea cricketer jailed.

Incident Occurred During PNG’s Challenge League Tour

Doriga, 30, was in Jersey representing Papua New Guinea in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. According to a report by ITV, the incident occurred during the early hours of Monday, August 25, as Doriga was returning to his hotel following the team’s scheduled fixtures.

Police stated that the cricketer encountered a woman on Hilary Street in St Helier shortly before 2:30 a.m. Doriga allegedly punched the woman, causing her to fall to the ground, before seizing her mobile phone and fleeing the scene. Authorities have not disclosed details regarding the extent of the woman’s injuries.

Swift Police Action Leads to Doriga’s Arrest

Doriga was arrested later that same day after a rapid investigation by the States of Jersey Police. He was interviewed by detectives and formally charged with robbery the next morning. On Wednesday, August 27, he appeared before the Jersey Magistrate’s Court and admitted guilt.

The case was subsequently transferred to Jersey’s Royal Court, where sentencing took place on Friday, November 28. Doriga received a prison term of three years, reflecting the severity of the offence and the nature of the unprovoked attack.

Police Praise Quick Identification and Response

Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan of the Criminal Investigations Department highlighted the efficiency and urgency displayed by the investigation team. He explained that locating the suspect was particularly challenging since Doriga had been on the island for only a few days.

“This was a fast-moving investigation involving an unknown suspect who had been in Jersey briefly,” McGranahan said. “Due to the seriousness of the allegation—a stranger assault on a lone female at night—we deployed several detectives and additional resources. Their efforts ensured Doriga was quickly identified, arrested, and the stolen property recovered.”

He further emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing violence against women, stating, “We remain dedicated to tackling violence against women and girls and ensuring the safety of island residents.”

Doriga Had Already Played Matches Before Arrest

Before the incident, Doriga had taken part in matches against Denmark and Kuwait, with more fixtures scheduled for later that week. His unexpected arrest and conviction have cast a shadow over Papua New Guinea’s campaign and raised broader concerns about conduct and oversight during international cricket assignments.
