Batting first, Amelia Kerr top-scored with 51* off 46 for the host side, while Sophie Devine added 39* off 36, both the batters remained at crease for long, but they scored runs with under par strike-rate, as New Zealand innings ended at 137/2 in 20 overs.
Darcie Brown (1/22) and Tahlia McGrath (1/23) picked up a wicket each for Australia, with Megan Schutt (0/36) being the most expensive.
Australia’s dominant chase
Beth Mooney’s blazing 75* off 42 balls guided Australia to a comfortable win, well supported by Georgia Voll’s quickfire 50 off 31 balls.
It was an easy chase for the visiting team, as Australia reached the target in just 13.3 overs, with Mooney maintaining an impressive strike rate of 178.57.
Lea Tahuhu was the only wicket-taker (3-0-12-2), while the rest of the attack failed to contain the Australian batters.
With this comprehensive victory, Australia Women take a 1-0 lead in the series and will look to seal the series in the second T20I.
New Zealand, on the other hand, will aim to bounce back and level the series in the next game which will be played on Sunday at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
