The dramatic game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru has left the cricket fans in dilemma as they are pleased to see RCB managed to qualify for playoffs, while CSK’s exclusion may have ended Dhoni’s participation chances in the mega league.

The legendary wicketkeeper batter, who led CSK to five IPL titles – joint-most by any team in IPL history, will turn 43 this July and is not active in any cricket competition expect the Indian Premier League (IPL), but as the IPL only been played once in a year, the prospects of Dhoni continue to play next season seems doubtful.

Apart from his age, physical tiredness and less to no cricket participation throughout the year, there is one more question in front of the franchise as whom to retain ahead of the mega auction.  

If Dhoni retires then CSK will likely retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana, and if not, then Dhoni’s name will be in the retention list at any cost.

Will MS Dhoni play in IPL 2025?

Well, it is the biggest question and will remain the biggest until Dhoni himself reveals his plans. However, CSK CEO Mr.Kasi Viswanathan has told cricbuzz about Dhoni’s future in CSK.  

MS Dhoni future in IPL: “He has not told us anything. He does not tell us such things anyway. He just decides.” – the franchise CEO was quoted as saying.

Dhoni had the great chance to end his IPL campaign on a high after CSK won the fifth IPL title under his leadership in 2023. But Thala opted to play one more season for his fans.  

The things did not go his and CSK’s ways in the 2024 season, as the men in yellow failed to qualify for playoffs. And it is less likely that Dhoni will continue to play for the franchise next year.  

MS has the tendency to take quick decisions without any prior indication. He left the test captaincy during India’s continuing tour of Australia in 2014, and shockingly announced his retirement on 15th August 2019 when no one expected it.
