KL Rahul’s Controversial Dismissal: Experts Question the DRS call

KL Rahul DRS Controversy in India vs Australia, Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024

The 2024-25 India tour of Australia started with a crushing blow for Jasprit Bumrah and his team. Before the end of the first session, team India had four dismissed for a total of 51 runs. In addition to this underperforming session, KL Rahul was dismissed dramatically. The call made by the third umpire through the Decision Review System (DRS) overturned the umpire’s original decision on the field of not out. Let’s look at KL Rahul DRS Controversy.

The moment the innings started to drift away was when Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed in the third over, after which wickets began to fall. Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed by a strong delivery from Josh Hazlewood, and then Virat Kohli came onto the pitch expecting to lead the innings. He played with his defensive maneuver for about two overs, until Hazlewood struck again, and the ball flicked his glove and went into the first slip. While the wickets were going down, KL Rahul came in and was looking forward to playing solid innings.

The moment the controversy began was in the 23rd over, KL Rahul was expertly handling the pressure from the Aussie pacers. Until a delivery from Hazlewood that was angled beyond the off stump, for which KL Rahul chose to be defensive. A loud appeal was made by the Australian team for the wicket, but the on-field umpire stayed loyal to his decision.

Australia chose to call for a DRS review, replays revealed two separate noises as the ball went past Rahul’s bat. However, Snicko picked up a spike. It was unclear whether the sound came from the ball hitting the bat or contacting the pad, despite the doubtfulness about the ball’s contact. The third umpire overturned the original decision, leaving the opener in disbelief.

Cricket pundits from both the Indian and Australian sides have spoken out, with former cricketers like Ravi Shastri and Michael Hussey expressing their concerns during live broadcasts. Shastri questioned the evidence for overturning the decision, while Hussey and others highlighted the use of the technology, casting doubts on the accuracy of the call.
