Indians who hit Centuries on their Captaincy Debuts

The 1st day of the first test of India tour of England 2025, saw Shubman Gill the new test captain score a ton on his captaincy debut, the feat which only a few players have come across in their careers. Here on we look at the Indians who hit centuries on their captaincy debuts. 

#Vijay Hazare

Vijay Hazare was the first Indian captain to ever score a century on his captaincy debut. His 164 against England in Delhi was a masterclass which came in the year 1951, his ton anchored India’s innings with dominance. He led team India for 14 Tests, and secured one victory, setting a benchmark for future Indian captains.

#Sunil Gavaskar

In 1976, Sunil Gavaskar marked his captaincy debut with a 116 against New Zealand in Auckland. His strong knock guided India to a strong position. Gavaskar captained India in 47 Tests, winning nine, and established himself as a legendary batsman and leader.

#Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar, in 1987, became the third Indian captain to score a century on his debut, facing the mighty West Indies at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. His tough ton showcased his  ability to counter pace. Vengsarkar led India in 10 Tests, and won two tests.

#Virat Kohli

India’s modern great Virat Kohli 2014 debut as the captain against Australia in Adelaide was historic. Scoring twin centuries 115 and 141, he remains the only Indian captain to achieve this record in a debut match. Kohli’s aggressive leadership yielded 40 wins in 68 Tests, making him India’s most successful Test captain.

#Shubman Gill

At 25, Shubman Gill became the youngest Indian captain to score a century on his Test debut in 2025. His 127* against England at Headingley, Leeds, highlighted his composure and flexibility as a leader. As a newly appointed captain, Gill’s performance showcases a promising future for Indian cricket.
