India Women squad for ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025

As the women’s ODI world cup 2025 approaches which is set to be played in the Indian sub-continent. With Harmanpreet Kaur set to lead the squad with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy. Here is the India women squad for ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.

Key Returns to the Team

The India Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 squad, unveiled by the BCCI, welcomes back Renuka Singh Thakur, who makes a vital return after being out of action since late 2024 due to injury. Her pace and ability to swing the ball early bolster India’s bowling attack for the home tournament. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, captaining her first 50-over World Cup, the 15-member squad also features experienced players like Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Deepti Sharma, and Jemimah Rodrigues, who provide batting solidity.

The inclusion of Sneh Rana and Arundhati Reddy enhances the all-round capabilities, ensuring a well-rounded team. These returns signal India’s intent to blend experience with skill, aiming to secure their maiden ODI World Cup title as they kick off against Sri Lanka on September 30, 2025.

Reasons for Exclusions

The omission of Shafali Verma and Shreyanka Patil from the squad has surprised many. Shafali, known for her aggressive top-order batting, was bypassed in favor of Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal as openers, with selectors prioritizing consistency over her high-risk style in the 50-over format.

Similarly, Shreyanka Patil, a talented young spinner, couldn’t secure a spot due to the presence of established spinners like Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, and Sneh Rana. The decision reflects a strategic choice to stick with a settled spin bowling unit and a balanced top order suited for home conditions. While both players have immense potential, the selectors’ focus on current form and team composition left no room for them in the final 15.

Upcoming Challenges

India, under Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership, faces a daunting task in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup on home soil. Their campaign starts against Sri Lanka on September 30, with the venue still undecided due to safety concerns at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium following IPL 2025 incidents. With a strong lineup featuring Mandhana, Renuka Singh, and all-rounders like Deepti Sharma, India aim for their first ODI World Cup triumph.

However, they must overcome fierce competition from top teams and the pressure of home expectations. The bowling, led by Renuka and supported by Radha Yadav, needs to exploit familiar conditions, while the batting, driven by Harmanpreet and Mandhana, must deliver consistently. Mastering these challenges will be crucial for India’s success.
