Chinnaswamy Replaced

The 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 30 to November 2, has faced a significant change with Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium losing its hosting rights. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) informed the BCCI of its inability to secure police clearance, prompting the International Cricket Council (ICC) and BCCI to shift five matches, including India’s opener, two league games, the second semifinal, and the final, to Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. The decision follows a June 2025 stampede at Chinnaswamy during IPL celebrations, which killed 11, leading to safety concerns.

Safety Concerns

The Bengaluru city police, citing the Justice (Retd.) Michael D’Cunha Commission report, declared Chinnaswamy unfit for major events after the tragic stampede. The commission’s findings highlighted infrastructure and crowd management issues, forcing the relocation of matches. This mirrors the recent shift of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament to Mysuru due to similar clearance issues. 

The Women’s ODI World Cup will now proceed with unchanged dates, with other venues Guwahati’s ACA Stadium, Indore’s Holkar Stadium, Visakhapatnam’s ACA-VDCA Stadium, and Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium retained their schedules.

Impact on Tournament and India’s Role

The venue change ensures the tournament, India’s fourth time hosting (1978, 1997, 2013), maintains its integrity despite geopolitical considerations, such as moving the final to Colombo if Pakistan qualifies. Navi Mumbai’s modern facilities will host India’s opening match on September 30, aiming to kick off the tournament on a high note. 

This shift underscores India’s commitment to safe, world-class events while navigating logistical challenges, ensuring the Women’s ODI World Cup remains a global showcase for cricket.
