Pakistan’s senior opener, Fakhar Zaman, has been fined and handed a demerit point following an on-field clash with umpires during the T20I Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Zaman breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. So let’s know about Fakhar Zaman ICC punishment.
Incident Overview: Confrontation with Umpires
The controversy occurred during the 19th over of Pakistan’s innings when Fakhar Zaman argued extensively with the on-field umpires after being dismissed. The incident drew the attention of match officials, including on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Asif Yaqoob, third umpire Rashid Riaz, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi.
Zaman’s actions were deemed a violation of Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses showing dissent against an umpire’s decision in international matches.
ICC Verdict: Fines and Demerit Points
The ICC, through Reon King of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, imposed a 10% match fee fine on Fakhar Zaman and added one demerit point to his disciplinary record. This marks Zaman’s first offense in the past 24 months.
“Zaman was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match,” stated the ICC.
Pakistan Triumph in T20I Tri-Series Final
Despite Zaman’s on-field frustration, Pakistan finished the 2025 T20I Tri-Series on a high note with a dominant six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi. Pakistan successfully chased a modest target of 115, with openers Sahibzada Farhan (23) and Saim Ayub (36) giving a steady start, while Babar Azam remained unbeaten at 37.
The Sri Lankan batting lineup faltered under pressure after a strong start of 84/1, eventually managing only 110 runs. Kamil Mishara’s lone fifty provided some resistance, but the rest of the batters couldn’t cross 15 runs.
On the bowling front, Mohammad Nawaz and Shaheen Afridi took three wickets each, while Abrar Ahmed claimed two, restricting Sri Lanka effectively. Pavan Rathnayake was the only standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking two wickets.
Pakistan’s T20I Tri-Series Dominance
This victory marked Pakistan’s fourth T20I Tri-Series title since 2018, following triumphs against Australia in Harare (2018), New Zealand in Christchurch (2022), and Afghanistan in Sharjah (2025). Pakistan concluded 2025 with 21 wins in 34 T20Is, their most successful calendar year in T20 cricket.
