BCCI sacks KL Rahul: The teams for the final two Test matches and the three-game ODI series against Australia were unveiled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While players like Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and KL Rahul returned to the ODI team, the Test lineup stayed largely unchanged from the first two matches with one minor adjustment. KL Rahul, who is struggling with his form in the longest format of the game, was removed from the position of vice captain, leaving the team without a vice captain.
Although Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, recently reminded detractors of KL Rahul’s potential, the selection committee of the BCCI on Sunday appeared to have reacted to the batter’s recent bad form and mounting criticism by removing him from his vice-captaincy position. The squad for the final two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia was announced, although no formal announcement was made.
No official announcement on KL Rahul’s removal as vice-captain of Team India
Neither the BCCI nor the team announcement announced on Sunday night issued a statement on the matter. But, Rahul’s name did not have the “VC” designation that appeared next to it in the India team list for the first two Test matches. Yet, the BCCI made no mention of Rahul’s replacement.
The BCCI’s answer came when criticism of Rahul’s batting was intensifying. He has only been able to score 38 runs in the series to date, and in his previous 10 innings, he has averaged 17 with only one half-century knock.
Harbhajan Singh views on KL Rahul
While speaking on the same topic of Rahul and if India needed to move on from the Rahul in the Indore Test, the legendary Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh in conversation with India Today has said that Rahul being sacked from his role as team India vice-captain, it is likely that the young Shubman Gill may find a place in the India XI.
“Yes because he is longer the vice-captain now. The team was just announced now and I feel the reason why he hasn’t been named the vice-captain is because Shubman Gill will be picked for the next match over KL Rahul. Gill has been in terrific form of late, in ODIs and T20Is. He became the super hero and I feel he will definitely get the chance. Also for Rahul, his dismissal today clearly shows that he is going through a rough time. He has a lot of quality and his a big player but his numbers could have been a lot better,” he said.
As far as the new vice-captain of team India is concerned, it is likely that the star bowler, Ravichandran Ashwin, who is currently troubling the Australian batters in the ongoing BGT series, may be announced as the new vice-captain of team India.
