Angelo Mathews Announced Retirement On Social Media
Angelo Mathews will soon bid farewell to the longest format of cricket after playing the first Test against Bangladesh in June 2025. The former Sri Lankan skipper will retire after playing on the same ground where he had debuted in Test cricket. Mathews received his Test cap against Pakistan, hosted at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle, Sri Lanka. The cricketer will also mark his last presence on the same ground for his last Test.
Before his 119th, representing his nation in 118 Tests, Angelo Mathews recorded 8167 runs in 210 innings with an average of 44.62. Mathews stands third on the list of the most runs for Sri Lanka in Test after Kumar Sangakkara (12400 runs) at the top, followed by Mahela Jayawardene (11814 runs) in second position.
The 37-year-old has 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries in Test records. In addition, Mathews’s highest score was 200* against Zimbabwe in 2020 in Harare. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan all-rounder took 33 wickets in 86 innings. His best bowling figure of 4/44 was against England in 2014.
Having led the Sri Lankan side on 34 Tests between 2013-2017, Angelo Matthews is the third most successful red-ball captain after Jayasuriya and Jayawardene. Under Mathews’s Test captaincy, Sri Lanka was victorious on 18 occasions out of 34 matches.
Via social media post, Angelo Mathews acknowledged his 17 years of Test career as his highest honor and pride. The Sri Lankan all-rounder thanked his family, coaches, and fans for standing by him throughout his Test career. Mathews also mentioned his availability for the white-ball cricket.
