They are experienced franchisees who have tasted success and know how to capitalize on moments others fail to recognize. Kolkata is a side that has understood that to win an IPL trophy, they need to build a team around an Indian core. They have invested heavily in their captain Shreyas Iyer who is in dream form and will look forward to carrying the same attitude to the new side.
The KKR retentions seem to be focused on this year’s IPL, unlike other teams. With Andre Russel and Suniel Naraine hitting an older age, it will be a concern for them if they are able to avoid injuries, which has been a concern with Russell, and perform to the best of their capabilities.
Venkatesh Iyer is inarguably great retention as he was one of the reasons for the team’s turnaround in the previous season that led them to the finals. Varun Chakravarthy’s form may be a concern for the team as he hasn’t played much domestic cricket and his last few outing with team India were not great and he is quite prone to injuries.
The KKR is a good batting and a fair bowling side but the problem may lie in the fact that they are not tested. Nitish Rana, Sam Billings, Aaron Finch, Tim Southee, Pat Cummins, Umesh Yadav are big names but are players one may not have imagined having in a team together. They have a new captain who has proved himself as a batter but has to prove his leadership skills moving in a completely different setup.
The Kolkata Knight Riders are a good side who would want their spinners and allrounders to be in peak form to avoid troubles. Even though they have good pace bowlers, it will be difficult to build a team around them. Their first couple playing 11 may look good but they do not have enough back-up or replacement for their quality players.

The KKR squad this season looks unpredictable. They are good on paper and have shown a lot of confidence but it will be interesting to see if they can show the predicament on the field. KKR dreadfully needs the players they have shown their trust in to perform well. The management may have tried to build a team around Skipper and may have gotten hands at Shreyas Iyer for good, the skills of the leader are yet to be tested. KKR is bound to give tough competition to the other teams this IPL but their pathway to the playoffs will not be easy as there are teams who are way more balanced and experienced than this side.
