Is India about to host Asia Cup 2022 while Sri Lanka is undergoing crisis?

With its economy in ruins and its political system in disarray, Sri Lanka is currently going through a horrible time. There are demonstrations against the administration taking place all around the nation, and some of these demonstrations have turned violent in some regions.

In this case, there are concerns over the nation’s hosting rights for the Asia Cup in 2022. Will Sri Lanka be able to host a multi-nation competition at a time when the nation is experiencing its worst economic crisis and people are struggling to meet their fundamental needs? And would India serve as a backup location if Sri Lanka is unable to host the event?

Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stated on Thursday that the organization will continue to monitor the situation in the island nation despite the ongoing political and economic turmoil there.

“Right now, I’m unable to remark (about the possibility of India hosting the event). We will continue to observe (the situation in Sri Lanka). There are Australian players. The Sri Lankan group is also succeeding. At this time, I am unable to remark. Give us a month to wait,” According to BCCI President to ANI.

Not to mention that Australia played a multi-format series in Sri Lanka just a few weeks ago. The series was very fought and featured excellent cricket from both teams. The Warne-Murli Trophy in Test cricket was split when the two-match series finished in a 1-1 tie, while Sri Lanka won the ODI series 3-2. Australia won the T20I series 2-1. Pakistan will also play host to Sri Lanka in a two-match series beginning on July 16 at Galle International Stadium.

In contrast to these series, which only include two teams, the Asia Cup will feature six teams, including Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and maybe another Asian side from the UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, or Hong Kong. It’s unclear who will be responsible for ensuring these teams’ safety when protests start to spread around the nation.
