In the forthcoming IPL season, which starts in late March or early April of next year, the BCCI is getting ready to unveil a potential game-changer. The substitution model utilized in football is very much this. In a virtual meeting on Thursday, the IPL governing council members discussed introducing the Impact Player concept, a move that was well-received by domestic coaches and players.
Any starting XI player that is replaced by an impact player can bat and bowl his full allotment of overs until the end of the 14th over of either inning.
Rules of the Impact Player?
- Teams must declare four substitutions or impact players at the time of toss. In addition to the starting XI, as per the rules.
- One of these can be applied during the game, before the end of the 14th over of any inning. A player may replace any starting XI member at any time and still bat and bowl his full allocation of overs.
- An important point to be noted is that an Impact Player can take on any role during the game. But when there are fewer than 10 overs per side, the Impact Player rule does not apply.
BCCI Plan for Future
The Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, which began play on October 11th, was the first tournament to use the impact player system as a trial, which the BCCI officially announced would be implemented in T20 leagues on September 17th 2022. The Indian Premier League is now expected to follow this suit in the 2023 edition.

In a virtual meeting on Thursday, the IPL’s governing council members discussed the introduction of the Impact Player idea. The clause, which is similar to a player substitute in football, was well accepted by domestic circuit coaches and players.
The BCCI sent a memo to the franchises on Thursday informing them of the strategic concept’s introduction to the cash-rich league.
IPL 2023 Mini-Auction
The BCCI previously declared that 991 players had signed up for the upcoming IPL 2023 auction. 714 Indian players registered for the upcoming season of the lucrative league before the registration deadline of November 30th.
Additionally, 277 players from other countries registered their names for the auction. On December 23, the auction will be held in Kochi.
