IPL 2023 Auctions: 5 Biggest Steals

IPL 2023 Auctions Biggest Steals

The mini-auctions are often front-loaded. It always favours a few players who are the biggest newsmakers. The demand and supply model of the auction enables a lucky few to grab an exorbitant fee in the auctions. Teams look to buy those players who could be the missing jigsaw in their puzzle. Let us look at IPL 2023 Auctions Biggest Steals in detail.

Players like Sam Curran and Cameroon Green received windfall primarily owing to this reason. The premier allrounders were the toast of the auction. This left little room for other players who had to settle for a bare minimum.

We look at a few such IPL 2023 Auctions Biggest Steals:

#1 Kane Williamson – 2 crores

He was the first player whose name was called in the auction. Kane Williamson had kept his base price at INR 2 crores. It was always going to be tough for him to replicate his last year’s fee of INR 14 crores.

There were whispers that he might not find any takers in the auction. But the defending champions Gujarat Titans immediately raised their paddle. To their relief, there was no competition for the bid. Gujarat managed to buy Williamson for just INR 2 crores.

#2 Joe Root – 1 crore

It took the last round for Joe Root to be finally part of the IPL. His previous reluctance to play in the IPL made many franchises hold back when his name came up for the auction. It was the Rajasthan Royals who eventually bought Joe Root for his base price of INR 1 crore. Joe Root is underrated when it comes to white-ball cricket. Root is one of the rare overseas players who plays spin beautifully. He can prove to be a fine investment if given a decent run.

#3 Kyle Jamieson – 1 crore

He was the third highest-paid player in the IPL auction until yesterday. RCB had picked Kyle Jamieson for a whopping INR 15 crores in the IPL 2021 mini-auction. He had a fairly decent IPL but he chose to skip the mega auction next year. The top all-rounders had already been brought when his name came up for the auction. For a while, it seemed he won’t find any bidders. But it was at this moment CSK lifted the paddle to acquire Jamieson for his base price of INR 1 crore.

#4 David Weise  – 1 crore

The Kolkata Knight Riders had a very limited purse heading into the auctions. They had to be very tactical in the way they pick their players in the auction. KKR remained a silent spectator for a large part of the auction. It was only at the fag end that they found their voice.

KKR wanted someone who could be an able backup to their talisman, Andre Russell. They found their answer in David Wiese. The tall allrounder is a strong hitter of the ball. He is someone who could bowl during any phase of the innings. Wiese at INR 1 crore is definitely a steal!

#5 Adil Rashid – 2 crores

He was one of the standout bowlers in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Adil Rashid was one of the key reasons why England was crowned T20 champions this year. His control and guise separates him from the rest of the crop. Rashid has hardly featured in the IPL. It was the only factor that could have gone against him. But for a side like SRH who needed a frontline spinner was eager to rope in Adil Rashid. The fact that they brought in Rashid for just INR 2 crores (his base price) indicates he was a big steal.
