IPL 2022 Retention Mistakes – Part II

IPL 2022 Retention Mistakes:An integral part of a team’s success in a tournament like the IPL is team culture. There is little surprise that teams like Mumbai and Chennai hold the joint most titles. These teams place utmost importance on creating an atmosphere where players can thrive.

Few players hence succeed in one team far greater than they would at a different franchise. Hence it’s imperative that the management has the foresight to identify a few gun players and build the team around them. There have been few franchises that have faltered big time in taking such decisions.

We look at a few such players who should have been retained:

#5 Mohammad Shami

He is credited for having the best seam position in the game. Mohammad Shami on his day is a match-winner. He can run through the sides, especially with the new ball. But he also has the tendency to leak runs. It is an art to manage a bowler like Shami. The support staff at Punjab clearly failed to do that. They released the pacer ahead of the mega auctions. GT managed to buy Shami in the auctions. The pacer had one of his best seasons in 2022. He went one better in 2023 bagging the purple cap itself!

#4 Yuzvendra Chahal

There have been very few bowlers who have been successful bowling at the Chinnaswamy. Yuzvendra Chahal is right there among the best. He was RCB’s number 1 bowler for almost 7-8 years. He thrived in a home venue like Bengaluru where the wicket is flat and the boundaries are short. But RCB in a strange move decided to look past Chahal in the 2022 mega auction. RR bought him for just INR 5.5 crores in the auction. Chahal finished first and fifth on the wicket-takers list in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

#3 David Warner

He was SRH’s talisman. David Warner was as much SRH as he was an Australian opener. He singlehandedly carried the side in his heydays. Warner won the orange cap thrice in 2015, 2017, and 2019. No other batsman has equalled this feat so far. Warner led the side to glory in 2016.

There was no better match in IPL than Warner and SRH. But a low season in 2021 saw cracks appearing between the player and the franchise. He was unceremoniously dropped from the side in a few of the games. SRH had no hesitation in releasing Warner ahead of the 2022 season. DC bought Warner in 2022. He continues to find ways to score runs in the IPL.

#2 Shreyas Iyer

He was one of the three young pillars around whom DC built its side in 2018. Shreyas Iyer stepped in as captain after Gautam Gambhir quit captaincy mid-season in 2018. Iyer led the side to playoffs in 2019 and they went all the way to play the finals in 2020. But an untimely injury saw Iyer being ruled out of the first half of the IPL in 2021.

DC continued to back Rishabh Pant as skipper despite Iyer being available in the second half. This prompted Iyer to look elsewhere in 2022. KKR was more than happy to appoint him as the skipper of the team once they picked him up in the mega auction in 2022.

#1 Hardik Pandya

He was one of the main fulcrum of MI’s engine room. Hardik Pandya joined the side in 2015 and was part of 4 of MI’s title wins in 6 years. He was a rare commodity in Indian cricket who could hit the ball long and hard and also bowl at a good pace. The thought that MI and Hardik could part ways was inconceivable. But MI chose to let the star allrounder go ahead of 2022. GT had marked Pandya as captaincy material once they picked him through the player draft for INR 15 crores.
